As an adult, Christmas brings joy, but it often brings stress and busyness as well. Life is no longer as simple. The magical lights have to be put up, the presents have to be purchased, wrapped and hid in a closet, and the cookies need to be baked so little hands can decorate them the next day. We have events to attend, outfits to coordinate and cards to stamp and put in the mailbox. If we do take the time to gaze at the twinkling lights, our to-do list still nags at the back of our thoughts.
Maybe the busyness of the season isn’t what weighs on you the most. Maybe it’s the deeper wounds of family tension, an unforeseen diagnosis, or the weight of financial pressure. Christmas has a way of making us long for what should be. We imagine a picture perfect day with family and friends,
full of laughter. It only heightens the truth that things are not how they should be.
And it’s true. Things are not as they should be. Instead of pushing that tension to the background, what if we used it to draw us closer to Jesus? What if, instead of this Advent study being another item on the to-do list, we used it to ground ourselves during the busiest time of the year? Let’s remind ourselves that the hope-filled spirit of Advent is not just for the Christmas season, but an anchor of truth to live out as we go—to remember that every single day, we have the hope of Jesus. He is here.
During this Advent season, we want to focus on the basics. Who is Jesus? He is fully God and He is fully man. Why did He come? He came to save us from our sin. What does that mean now? He is with us. The first four days of each week will cover one of these basic truths. We’ve set aside the fifth day as a time to pray, with a sample prayer and a few prayer prompts.
If you’re new to the Christian faith, we are so glad you’re here! We hope this study encourages you and deepens your walk with Jesus. These are some of the foundational truths which our faith is built on.
If you’ve followed Jesus for a while, you’ve likely heard these things before. That’s okay. It’s good for our souls to go back to the old, deep truths of our faith. To be reminded of the Who and the why we celebrate this season. We have so much more to rejoice over than presents and festivities. We have a God who loves us so much that He came and joined us in our broken world. He is unlike any other.
