The largest skyscraper in San Francisco, the Salesforce Tower, opened in January 2018. The impressive building stands 1,070 feet high. To withstand the wind and the strongest earthquakes projected for the area, the building foundation required drilling 42 piles 300 feet to bedrock and a massive concrete foundation 14 feet thick. Pouring the 49 million pounds of concrete took 18 hours.
Foundations are critical. They are also unseen. This study is designed to be a simple, practical, hands-on tool to equip and motivate you as you disciple a new believer to become rooted in her faith. The study can be used in a one-on-one setting or in a small-group setting.
To begin, set up a regular time to meet with those you are discipling each week for an hour. Each week, have your friend or small group bring a pen, Bible, and notebook and write questions about things they are learning and reading.
We will be camped out in 1 John. The talented Nika Spaulding, ThM, has partnered with me to help teach from 1 John each week on days one and four of this study. These lessons follow our typical IF:Equip study format and will help enhance your own understanding of 1 John by giving you insights and commentary on each chapter of the book. You will assign homework to the women you disciple and have them read through 1 John each week, looking for different themes. By having them read and reread the same book, we are helping train new believers to interact with the text and ask deeper questions, thereby imparting important Bible study skills. For those who have never opened a Bible, by the end of this study they will know at least one book well.
On days two, three, and five of each week, we dive into practical illustrations that model different ways to teach some foundational lessons. We walk you through the steps to teach these important truths and, on these days, suggest you seek out an immediate opportunity to teach the illustration. By practicing with a family member or a Christian friend, we hope you will find a comfortable environment to work on teaching these lessons until you feel confident with the content.
If you are a Christian who has grown up going to church, I encourage you to learn the material to teach these important foundations. Over the years I’ve found that these lessons have helped many people fill in gaps in their own spiritual foundations.
The vision of IF:Gathering has remained simple and clear: we exist to equip women with gospel-centered resources so they may learn more about who God is and disciple other women right where they are.
May the lessons on these pages help equip women to love God more and disciple a new generation of faith-filled world changers.
