As we prepare for IF:Gathering 2020 and our time in Romans 8, we are going to use the chapter as our guide for prayer over the next 20 days. You’ll notice Paul starts the chapter by writing about our identity in Christ. This is not who we might be. This is not who we hope to be someday. This is who we are right now. As you remember your identity this week, pray that God would remind you of truths you’ve forgotten, enlighten you to new ones, and restore your worship of Him in the process.
Week 1, Day 1: We are forgiven.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
In Christ, there is no more guilt for what you’ve done. No more shame for what you’ve suffered. No more whispering, “God does not love you.” Your debt is paid. Your sins are removed. Your burden is lifted. Christ’s righteousness has become your own. The gavel has fallen and the verdict is clear: You are fully and freely forgiven.
Sample Prayer: Father, we confess that sometimes we still feel mired in guilt and shame over how we have sinned or what we have suffered. Today we say, “No more.” We stand up under that burden and declare, “Because of Jesus, we will not be haunted by the past, paralyzed in the present, or fearful of the future.” You have said, “My Son has paid your debt” and we trust your loud, clear voice. Help us live in this identity: forgiven. Help us remember what it cost your Son Jesus to purchase our forgiveness, and help us live lives that prove His forgiveness is real.
Ask God to bring to light the areas where you feel stuck and condemned.
Pray that God would transform those around you by setting them free.
