Do You Believe God Exists?
We believe God exists. We believe God is real. Even though the Nicene Creed does not specifically mention God’s existence, it assumes His existence from the beginning: “We believe in one God.” Do you believe He exists? This question is absolutely crucial and fundamental, and one we all must answer at some point in our lives. At times it is difficult to believe God’s existence, because of the chaos in our world and the fact that we cannot see Him. And if there is a God, we might wonder, is it the God of the Bible?
As we begin to study the truths of the Nicene Creed, we encourage you to dig deep, to wrestle with these big truths, to connect the head and the heart, and to explore these timeless truths with new vision. Whether you have studied these truths before, grown up in the church, or never been to church, it doesn’t matter! Press into God, seek Him, and ask Him to reveal Himself. We pray you will encounter God and know Him more through this study.
The Scriptures also speak to God’s existence. The Bible discusses an inner awareness of God’s existence, as well as ways creation proves His existence. How can we know God exists? Because we cannot see God, there is always an element of faith involved. We must take God for His word and believe He exists. Even Jesus knew this would be a difficult task for us. In John 20:29, Jesus blessed those who believed in God without physically seeing Him: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Faith plays a key role in believing God exists.
Inner Awareness of God’s Existence
Romans 1:19 says, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” In this passage, Paul was speaking to a group of Gentiles who rejected God. Paul argued that God has shown all people He exists by giving them an inner sense that they are His creation and He is their creator. Because God has made Himself plain to us and has shown Himself to us, we can know deep within our souls that He exists.
Creation Speaks to God’s Existence
The created world speaks to God’s existence. In the beginning, the Bible says, God created the earth (Genesis 1:1). Creation is God’s handiwork. Creation represents God’s power, beauty, splendor, glory, and greatness. Romans 1:20 says, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, are known, seen, and understood through all God has made. Psalm 19:1 says much the same thing: “The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” The beauty of the created earth instills wonder in us. The grandeur of mountains, the vastness of the sea, the complexity of the human brain, and the vibrant colors of a sunset. The created world points to a higher being, to the God of the Bible, who exists and created all things.
